Cal was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana with her four brothers.
At Colorado State University she discovered the benefits of running, aerobic dance and lifting weights to refresh the mind and spirit. Her interest in human behavior and the mind-body connection drew her to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. After graduation, she ventured west to California.
Settling in San Francisco, Cal worked in the corporate world of finance for 5 years at Bear, Stearns and Merrill Lynch Inc. Her passion for cycling during this time, took her to France to cycle the Pyrenees with Europeds, an American based bicycle touring company. A year later she was asked to be one of three employees leading tours throughout the many regions of France.
Returning from Europe in 1989 , Cal joined a young startup company called PowerBar , helping promote their athletic energy food bar. Within the fours years, she became the first National Promotions Coordinator to the Aerobic/Health Fitness Industry, and the Outdoor Specialty Industry.
In 1993 Cal became a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and relocated to Joshua Tree, California. In nearby Palm Springs, she still trains clients at their homes, as well as teaches water exercise classes at resorts. Cal believes that life long strength training, in the gym, outdoors, or water, can be a huge benefit for all.
Cal is passionate about outdoor adventure: she and her husband spend the summer months traveling, via van, throughout the western United States and internationally- technical rock climbing (long free routes & big walls), backpacking, or just “bagging peaks”.
Cal's 17 years of technical rock climbing have taught her crucial life lessons in: trust, knowing her physical/mental limits, listening and communicating, and assessing a situation calmly. As a result, Cal's rock climbing has taken her to some remarkable locations, including nine ascents of Yosemite's El Capitan, on a sponsored expedition to the Indian Himalayas with The North Face, and motivational guest speaker with Motorola Inc.
Cal's love of wilderness is infectious and her training insights invaluable. Let her experience be your guide as you explore Joshua Tree National Park.
